Upland cold-pocket hemlock forest borders stand to east, and Laurel Run boeders it to the west. Beyond the cold pocket (Pleistocene terrace) is deciduous forest with large white oak component and patches of cleared meadows. Dirt road runs parallel to Laurel Run about 100 m east of the stand.;Rarely flooded floodplain terrace (100 yr?) of hemlock and rhododendron with flats of interrupted fern. Rocky substrate along good quality high gradient streams. Was grazed until~ 40 years ago, and logged about 100 years ago.
Representativeness
Plot was placed to sample infrequently flooded forest within larger patch of never-flooded hemlock forest. Discontinuous small patches of floodplain forest probably aggregate to about 1 ha at this site.
